The end of the traffic jam is in sight

Do you know how much damage traffic jams cause to the environment? It is estimated that 8 billion litres of fuel is wasted every year by cars in North America and Europe going nowhere in a jam.

As well as wasting fuel, those cars, vans and trucks are pumping CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Get rid of traffic jams and save potentially 20 per cent in fuel consumption.  That means, as much as 300 million less tons of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.

And the best way to stop jams developing? Autonomous cars. Much has been written about the safety gains that autonomous cars with advanced accident avoidance technology on board will bring to society.

Less appreciated is the fact that autonomous cars will be able to improve traffic flow by driving at the most efficient speed to suit the conditions. In the future, in other words, traffic jams won’t exist. The result? Fewer frustrated drivers, less fuel being burned and fewer emissions in the air.

Of course, if those autonomous cars are electric vehicles, fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions will be greatly reduced anyway.

That is why; the Renault-Nissan Alliance will be ready with revolutionary commercially-viable Autonomous Drive in multiple vehicles by 2020 and to make the technology available across the entire range of products within two vehicle generations.

At the Alliance, we do more than build cars. We create opportunities for change.
