The Alliance leads the revolution in driverless cars

Did you know that in 2020, just five years time, The Renault-Nissan Alliance will bring autonomous cars to market? It was the first car group to pledge a concrete timeline for autonomous vehicles.

Working closely with a number of respected universities and research companies, The Alliance has managed to condense more than 80 years worth of research into less than a decade.

By using existing radar and sensor-based safety technologies as building blocks, and involving teams from universities including MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Carnegie Mellon and the University of Tokyo, Renault and Nissan has been able to produce a number of prototype autonomous vehicles.

These prototypes include technology that detects road conditions and automatically operates the car’s main controls including the steering, braking and accelerator. The cars can operate autonomously on highways, merging into traffic, changing lanes and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

Of course, before self-driving cars can be allowed on our roads there needs to be a number of significant legislative and practical changes to our road network and infrastructure.

To achieve this, The Alliance is working with municipalities, policymakers, insurance companies and network providers to develop an ecosystem for the technology. And The Alliance is also studying the socio-economic impact autonomous cars will bring. The technology is nothing less than a revolution.

At the Alliance, we do more than build cars. We work towards a safer and more sustainable future.
