Dubai explores incentives for EV growth

Residents of Dubai may soon have plenty of reasons to go electric, following the inauguration of a new charging network and plans for a range of consumer incentives. As part of its vision to create a more sustainable, smarter city, the emirate is currently investigating measures such as subsidised prices for zero-emission vehicles.

Dubai's first public EV charging station was recently opened at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), with many more scheduled over the coming months. As part of the Smart Dubai Initiative, an infrastructure of 100 stations will be established at petrol stations, shopping malls, airports and other public places across the emirate this year. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has chosen to install three types of stations, with the fastest capable of charging a battery in as little as 30 minutes. Each station will have the capacity to charge two vehicles simultaneously.

As well as providing a network, the emirate is exploring incentives to make EV purchase and ownership more attractive. Price subsidies are one option, while other possibilities under consideration include reducing customs duty, a measure that has already enjoyed considerable success in Europe and the US.
