Renault "J" five-speed manual gearbox a win-win for Renault and Nissan

The “J” gearbox is Renault’s best-selling manual gearbox and is another example of how the Alliance benefits both Renault and Nissan.

Thanks to Renault’s expertise in this technology, Nissan is able to readily source this key component for its cars around the world. Meanwhile, Renault is able to benefit from increased production capacity at its plants.

Today the five-speed transmission is produced in major markets around the world: France, Turkey, Romania, Spain, Chile, India and China.

Production in India and China began earlier this year to help relieve capacity constraints in Europe and help the Alliance minimize its foreign exchange exposure in those markets. In India, the gearbox is being produced at Renault-Nissan Alliance India Private Limited (RNAIPL), while in China it is being manufactured at Dongfeng Nissan Engine Company (DNEC) in Huadu, China.
More than 90% of all Renault and Nissan cars sold in India are fitted with the gearbox, while the gearbox is fitted on 30% of Nissan’s cars in China. In the future, the gearbox will also be fitted on Renault cars, when Renault starts producing cars there locally.

Production of the gearbox first began in 1981 at the Renault Cleon plant in France. The gearbox has sold almost 2.7 million units so far this year and is fitted on Renault and Nissan vehicles, as well as Mercedes-Benz and LADA cars.
