Renault's CO2 reduction initiatives in Morocco gain official approval

The United Nations has recognised Renault’s significant efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at its plant in Tangier, Morocco.

By switching from natural gas to biomass for its boilers and implementing a highly effective heat recovery process in its paint shop, the advanced Renault plant has cut CO2 emissions by almost 10,500 metric tonnes a year.

The improvements have been approved by the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) initiative, part of the Kyoto Protocol. CDM helps fund emission reduction projects and assigns Credit Emission Reduction units (CERs) which can be sold to industrialised countries allowing them to fulfil part of their emission-reduction objectives.

CDM is guided by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Reductions at Renault Tanger Méditerranée (RTM SAS) come thanks to a partnership formed by Renault, Veolia Environment and the Kingdom of Morocco. To date, it is the only automotive plant in the world to have had its efforts to reduce emissions approved by the CDM.
