▪ The plant is to produce 340,000 vehicles a year, making it the largest in Africa.

Presided over by Abdelkader Amara, Moroccan Minister of Industry, Trade and New Technologies, and in the presence of Jacques Prost, Managing Director of the Renault Morocco group, and a number of key figures in politics and economics, the inauguration of the second production line at the Renault-Nissan Tangier plant was celebrated on Tuesday October 8, 2013.

 

The new line will increase the site’s output capacity to 340,000 vehicles a year, starting in 2014. It required an investment of €400 million and will produce Dacia Sandero and Dacia Sandero Stepway, two leading models in the Dacia range. 

 

This achievement, the result of a public-private partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Renault group, makes the plant the largest in Africa, a major industrial ambition and a source of productivity and development for the country’s automotive sector. The commitment of suppliers in their support for the plant contributed to the successful completion of this new step forward, while meeting technical and economic requirements. This development makes Morocco a cornerstone of manufacturing competitiveness and respects the ambitious road map coordinated by the Renault-Nissan plant and the Kingdom of Morocco together with the Moroccan Association for Automotive Industry and Trade, AMICA. 

 

“Today’s ceremony is extremely important to us. It illustrates Renault’s willingness to meet its commitments and Moroccan Authorities’ ambition to develop the automotive industry in Morocco. I am sure this second production line will produce great quality Sandero vehicles and will be a strong testimony to the “made in Morocco” label globally,” says Jacques Prost, Managing Director of the Renault Morocco group.

 

Some 1,400 people have been recruited for the needs of the new line, raising the plant’s total workforce to 5,000. Morocco’s Institute for Training Automotive Industry Professionals, IFMIA, a powerful tool for the development of human resources, is pursuing its development strategy to hone the skills of the plant’s new recruits and existing staff. 

 

Inaugurated on February 9, 2012 by HM King Mohammed VI and in the presence of Carlos Ghosn, President of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the Tangier plant got off to a strong start and day by day has successfully developed its expertise and met its objectives. The adventure now continues with a second production line and a third vehicle.

 

The Renault-Nissan Tangier plant in figures

 

▪ The Renault-Nissan Tangier plant is a société anonyme (limited company) owned 52.4% by the Renault group and 47.6% by Caisse de Dépôts et de Gestion (CDG).

▪ The plant produces Dacia brand vehicles: Dacia Lodgy, Dacia Dokker and Dacia Dokker Van on line 1, and Dacia Sandero and Dacia Sandero Stepway on line 2.

▪ The site has two production lines (including stamping, paint, sub-assembly and assembly) and covers an area of 300 hectares.

▪ The site works on a two-shift basis and has a total workforce of 5,000, of whom over 300 executives. 

 

Key dates

 

▪ September 2007: Signature, in the presence of HM King Mohammed VI, of the letter of intent to create the Renault Tanger Méditerranée site. 

▪ January 2008: Signature of the framework agreement with the Moroccan government.

▪ October 2008: Signature of an agreement between the Ministry of Industry, Trade and New Technologies, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Employment and Professional Training, and Renault Tanger Méditerranée on the creation of a Training Center for Automotive Professionals. 

October 2009: Official stone-laying ceremony at the Renault Tanger Méditerranée plant.

March 2011: Inauguration of the Institute for Training Automotive Industry Professionals (IFMIA).

February 2012: Inauguration of the plant by HM King Mohammed VI and Carlos Ghosn. 

January 2013: The zero-emission, zero-CO2 site becomes operational. 

June 2013: The plant produces its 100,000th car. 

September 2013: The plant exports its 100,000th car.
