Massachusetts EV initiative given funding boost

Residents of Massachusetts in the United States will continue to benefit from an important state-wide EV rebate programme thanks to the injection of an additional $2 million by local authorities. The initiative allows locals to receive up to $2,500 for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and plug-in hybrid light-duty vehicles.

Inaugurated in June 2014, the Massachusetts Offers Rebates for Electric Vehicles (MOR-EV) programme has provided rebates to more than 700 people. Over 60% of rebates have been for battery electric vehicles, and Nissan has proved to be the most popular manufacturer, accounting for over one quarter of all successful applications.

To qualify for MOR-EV, drivers must live in Massachusetts and purchase or lease a battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, or fuel-cell electric vehicle. Rebates of $750 are also available for certain zero-emission motorcycles. In all cases, the vehicle must be owned or leased for at least 36 months.

With MOR-EV, Massachusetts aims to reduce its reliance on foreign oil and meet its objective to make a 7.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector by 2020.
