Nissan LEAF sets EV parade world record

Autumn leaves blew into the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit at the end of November. Or rather, that should be autumn LEAFs.

UK owners of the world’s most popular pure electric vehicle got together at the home of the British Grand Prix to set an official Guinness world record for the largest parade of electric vehicles.

In the end 255 Nissan LEAF owners braved stormy weather to stage what was undoubtedly the quietest lap ever heard at the circuit. They were also given the chance for quicker individual laps of the track.

With backing from Nissan Motor (GB), which provided a bank of quick chargers for those who had travelled from afar, other attractions at the event included the awesome LEAF Nismo RC electric racer which was put through its paces.

Among the participants was TV actor and presenter Robert Llewellyn, a LEAF owner and almost evangelical advocate of zero emission mobility. As he arrived at the track he Tweeted: “It’s very Leafy here… 100’s of ‘em!”

Another visitor, Stephanie Lay, also took to Twitter. She wrote: “This many quiet cars is very eerie…”

But it’s unlikely the record will stand long. As sales continue to grow – and they will be given a huge boost when production of Nissan LEAF starts in the UK from early in 2013 –expect an even bigger turnout next time.
