Nissan in Mexico appoints the company's first female regional President

Nissan announced that the new President of Nissan Mexicana will be Mayra Gonzalez, 39, who takes up the position on 1st July this year. The announcement comes as part of a number of senior management changes in Japan, China and Mexico.

Behind the above statement there is groundbreaking news. With this appointment Mayra Gonzalez, currently the regional Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nissan Mexicana, will become the first female executive ever to assume the Presidency of regional operations within the Nissan Group.

She is well equipped to take the role of President with vast experience from her previous roles in the customer quality, sales and dealer network development areas of the business, in both North and South America. One of the main projects in her new job will be the new Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler plant that will start producing Infiniti vehicles in 2017.

The appointment of a female executive to such a significant position should come as no surprise. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is an active supporter of gender diversity and is set on increasing the number of women in its business and especially so at manager level.

Figures released at the end of 2015 show that the percentage of women employees at both Renault and Nissan increased year on year, with female managers accounting for 18.3% of all employees at Renault, up from 17% in 2013. Women accounted for 22% of the company’s 2,000 global key positions. In Japan, Nissan’s percentage of female managers is more than triple the national average for large manufacturers. Nissan’s goal is to have women represent 10% of managers in Japan and 14% of all management positions by 2017.

With the appointment of Mayra Gonzalez to the head of Nissan Mexicana, that commitment is clear.
