Vermont: top of the US energy efficiency league table

Vermont: top of the US energy efficiency league table

Hold your head high, people of Vermont and New York!

A new survey conducted by internet-based personal finance resource Wallet Hub has looked at the way Americans use their energy to create a state-by-state league table.

The results were based on their energy efficiency at home and on the road, the latter reached by dividing the annual vehicle miles driven by the gallons of fuel consumed.

Vermont and New York topped the poll when both scores were combined, but the top five car-related scores were recorded (in order) by Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Vermont and California, with North Dakota being the worst.

It probably won’t be a surprise to see Florida, Vermont and California in that list as all are hot spots for sales in electric vehicles, but the inclusion of the other states suggests that EVs or at the very least plug-in hybrids are making an impact there, too.

The survey highlights the role energy – or more specifically energy conversation – will play in America’s financial and environmental future. A McKinsey & Company report estimates that a $520 billion initial investment in energy efficiency could save the economy more than $1.2 trillion, with greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 1.1 gigatons. That’s the same as taking the entire US fleet of passenger cars and light trucks off the road!
