Ireland debuts expanded charge point network

Own an electric car in Ireland, or thinking of getting one? There’s reason to celebrate, for Electricity Supply Board (ESB), Ireland’s sole electricity operator, has finished installing a network of charging points throughout the country.

As part of a pilot project co-funded by the European Commission, 46 new fast charge points were installed at major motorways and intercity routes, with at least one available every 60 kilometers. In addition, there are now 10 AC charge points at national rail stations, and even five fast chargers in Northern Ireland across the border. This brings the total number of public charge points to almost 1,200, connecting every major town across the island.

“It is a great achievement to reach the completion of this project,” said John McSweeney, head of innovation at ESB. “A huge amount of work has been put into providing fast charge points throughout Ireland and it is expected that the nationwide network of charge points will encourage people to go electric in the near future.”

Indeed, combined with the common IT and communications platforms already in place, EV drivers can now seamlessly travel across two jurisdictions for the first time in Europe. Data from the project will be used to analyze driver behavior and habits, which will provide advice for future such programs in other EU countries.
