Renault and Nissan showcase concept cars at Goodwood

The Goodwood Festival of Speed at the end of June was a chance for both Nissan and Renault to showcase their latest innovations, including several concept cars. Visitors to the festival were treated to an exciting glimpse of the future.

Based in the grounds of Goodwood House in the English countryside, the Festival of Speed is a three-day celebration of motorsports, attracting 180,000 people annually. Its centrepiece is the historic hill climb, but the event also gives manufacturers a chance to present breakthrough concepts – and Nissan and Renault made the most of this opportunity.

At the Nissan stand, virtual racing became reality. The Japanese manufacturer presented a physical version of the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo, a car that was initially designed for an exclusively virtual existence, as part of the Gran Turismo video game series.

This new concept car features a slick aerodynamic body with optimised airflow management, and the virtual version is available for download this month. It will also be used by the Nissan GT Academy, a training programme that gives gamers a chance to become real-life racers.

Renault, meanwhile, offered Goodwood visitors a touch of nostalgia, with a display of landmark vehicles from its 115-year involvement in motorsports, as well as a look at the future. The new rear-engined Twingo was presented for the first time in the UK, alongside the Twin'Run concept car that served as its inspiration.

Other highlights included the all-electric DeZir concept and the eco-friendly R-Space, plus a UK debut for the Mégane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R, which, on a recent trip to Nürburgring Nordschleife, recorded the fastest ever lap time for a production front wheel drive.
