Cities across Europe are going through a quiet revolution as taxi companies start to shift from conventional diesel-powered cabs to zero-emission - and near-silent - Nissan LEAF taxis.

The world's best-selling electric vehicle (EV) is fast becoming the taxi drivers' favourite too; attracted by lower running costs and fuelled by a desire to reduce airborne pollution in city centres.

The Renault ZOE and Nissan LEAF have found a new lease of life as police patrol cars, with constabularies in the UK and France choosing to equip their officers with the zero-emission vehicles.

Now in its third model year, the highly innovative, industry-leading Nissan LEAF pure electric vehicle added another award to its trophy case in the US with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) "Top Safety Pick" designation, which recognizes vehicles for excellent performance in four passenger safety tests.

The Nissan LEAF has made history again by taking the number two spot in the overall car sales chart for Norway, beating a host of household name combustion engined cars in the process.

This month has not been a one-off success - with the Nissan LEAF taking 5th position overall in the sales charts for 2013 to date, and number 13 overall in 2012. Since the start of sale 18 months ago more than 4,500 of the 100% electric models have been sold in Norway, making it the best selling car in the Nissan range for that market.

The case for Londoners to switch to a pure electric vehicle has become even more compelling as even tougher emission restrictions come into force. 

The fully electric Nissan LEAF has been zooming across the country of Mexico for months now. So far, only taxi drivers and government officials in Mexico City and in Aguascalientes are driving them. But soon those in Mexico who want to drive a 100 percent pure electric car will be able to buy the Nissan LEAF. That is why the company is working hard to get more electric vehicle charging infrastructure in place.

In 2010, the city of Lyon adopted an equitable and sustainable approach to urban management through its territorial climate and energy plan (PCET). Further reflecting its environmental aims, the city acquired a pool of ten Renault ZOE vehicles in March 2013.
