Electric cars drive through gas shortage in New York and New Jersey

Vehicle owners in New York and New Jersey have been struggling to find gasoline since super storm Sandy hit the East Coast.  But people with fully electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF are having an easier time charging up and getting to where they need to go.

After Sandy, millions in New York and New Jersey were affected.  Offices, homes and subways flooded. Trees tore through structures, and even now with much of the electrical power restored and debris removed, it is not easy to get gas.  Long lines at filling stations are forming all across the area.  Even at two in the morning, vehicles are backed up for miles.

Steering LEAF into tomorrow

Steering LEAF into tomorrow

We’ve probably all done it: let our mind wander when stuck in a stop-go traffic jam and failed to notice that the car ahead has stopped. Most times, a quick jab on the brakes does the trick and prevents an accident.

Sometimes, though, a driver doesn’t spot the problem until it’s too late. Which is why we developed Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCAA) as an integral part of the Nissan Safety Shield technology.

A sustainable test home with a Nissan LEAF to match!

Samantha and Fabrice Pastour and their two boys are living their green dream. As test tenants of Velux’s Maison Air & Lumière 2020 sustainable home project, they are also testing project partner Nissan’s LEAF in the role of family car.

Set in a residential Paris suburb, the airy model home was voted a Top 100 initiative by the 2012 Rio Earth Summit. It already surpasses EU 2020 sustainability and environmental standards.

Meet the mum who's made EV history

Meet the mum who's made EV history

When young Norwegian mum Solveig Marie Ødegård decided she had to learn to drive to transport her new family around, she went to a local driving school, took some lessons and passed her test.

So far so normal. What makes Solveig Marie’s story so very different is that she took those lessons and passed the test in an electric car, a Nissan LEAF.
She has never, in her entire life, driven a car powered by a petrol or diesel engine.

Electric vehicles could one day do the parking for you

Electric vehicles could one day do the parking for you

Nissan’s self-driving and parking technology could revolutionize the way we drive.

Picture this. You are driving into town in your Nissan LEAF zero-emission electric car, looking for somewhere to park. Pulling into an underground parking garage, instead of circling around, trying to find a space, you simply pull up, get out, head off to the shop and let your car find its own parking space.

Sounds like science fiction? Well it’s not – this technology, developed by Nissan, is very real, and it’s already working. At the CEATEC 2012 show, Japan’s leading electronics exhibition, Nissan has been showing off the LEAF NSC-2015 prototype, a car that’s so intelligent, it can do the hard work of driving and parking for you.

Turning over a new LEAF

Turning over a new LEAF
The Paris Motor Show, which runs until 14 October, isn’t just a static exhibition. Thanks to the zero emissions produced by electric vehicles, one of the halls of the vast Parc des Expositions has been converted into a test track

We caught up with one young driver getting his first taste of electric power from behind the wheel of a Nissan LEAF… and he loved it. He liked the way it drove, and especially the way the on-board technology keeps the driver up to date with the level of charge and the location of the nearest charging point.

Going on patrol with Nissan LEAF

Going on patrol with Nissan LEAF

The phrase ‘looking for leads’ is about to take on a whole new meaning for the Portuguese police, for they have just taken delivery of eight Nissan LEAF electric vehicles. And leads – of the electrical variety – come as standard!

The zero-emission cars, which have flashing blue lights and clear ‘Policia’ markings, will be used by Portugal’s PSP (Policia de Segurança) urban security force mainly as part of its Safe Schools Programme.
